Roller derby tournament - Royal Windsor Rollergirls, London Rollergirls' 'Batter C Power' and Helsinki Roller Derby (Posted 20th Dec)

Saturday 28th January 2012 - it's going to be big!  We are hosting a one-day mini-tournament with Royal Windsor Rollergirls, London Rollergirls' C-team, 'Batter C Power', and Finland's first roller derby league - Helsinki Roller Derby - THREE bouts for just £15.

London Rollergirls are the biggest and longest running roller derby league in the UK.  Their new C-team, 'Batter C Power' - named after London's iconic landmark, featuring a selection of skaters who have previously skated for LRG's A-team, 'London Brawling, their B-team, 'Brawl Saints', as well as new girls and seasoned regulars from their four intraleague house teams.  We're delighted to tempt them out of the big smoke to bout against us.

We are also thrilled to have the girls from Helsinki Roller Derby coming over - the third Scandinavian league to bout against RWRG.  Eleven skaters from HRD recently took part at the Blood & Thunder Roller Derby World Cup in Toronto, joining up with their fellow Finns to form 'Team Finland Roller Derby' - and coming in at a respectable fifth place at the World Cup.

Tickets go on sale soon at windsorrollergirls.com- so save the date, save your Christmas monies to spend at our vendor village (derby gear, clothing, and accessories galore), and as soon as you step inside on Saturday 28th January at 12 noon (first bout starts at 1pm), save yourself a sweet seat trackside to get the best view of what promises to be a triple threat of high-speed, full-contact, roller derby action.

Saturday 19th November was a historic day for the league - not only did we bout in our new home venue, Windsor Leisure Centre, for the first time, but it was also the day when Royal Windsor - working with new additions to the team - took on Stockholm's A-Team, who were fielding a roster containing EIGHT Team Sweden players.

First up, Stockholm's B team went head-to-head with a collective of women who were lean, mean, and dressed in green - the 'Super Troopers', a coalition of players from across the UK.  Women from Portsmouth Roller Wenches, Kent Rollergirls, Hertfordshire Hells Belles, Seaside Sirens Roller Girls, Dolly Rockit Rollers, Bristol Harbour Harlots and the Royal Windsor Rollergirls joined forces.

Despite not having the advantage of having skated together before, the 'Super Troopers' gelled together surprisingly quickly and displayed some good defensive work, and consistent walls to stop Stockholm and help their jammers pull clear of the pack.  However, Stockholm's B-Team had the advantage of knowing their own players and their strategies. The final score was Stockholm (B) 97 - Super Troopers 41.

In the second half of the double header, the Royal Windsor Rollergirls (RWRG) took to the track, determined to give it everything we had.  RWRG struggled at the start; SRD were on 63 points before Foxtrot Oscar scored us our first 4 points.  RWRG's Crucivix fought hard and scored against the odds, coming up against the likes of Mad Maloony and dealing with the challenge of former Rat City, Gotham, and Crime City skater, the statuesque Swede Hurt.  Trashbag proved to be a real crowd pleaser; mashing her way through the pack with grim determination as a jammer, and not letting ANY Stockholm blockers get in herway.

Despite the massive score difference, Royal Windsor fought hard and used some smart blocking and managed to recycle the jammers into the pack at times, keeping the Swedish girls on their toe(stops).  The final score was Stockholm (A) 259 - 93 RWRG.

It was a slow start for Windsor in our final game at Wycombe Sports Centre,  with DRR racking up 46 points before CruciVix scored for Windsor in the 9th jam of the 1st period.  With seven players making their Windsor debut against an experienced DRR fielding 2 world cup players this was always going to be a tough game.  The final score 65 - 163.

Thanks to a hugely supportive crowd and to DRR for being an amazing opposition and a great test in our season opener.  Congratulations to Faerie Knottie for her Best Jammer award, Foxtrot Oscar (making her debut for Windsor after transferring from the Dolly Rockit Rollers) for her best blocker award and to Bloodspill Blonde for another well deserved MVP award.    Our next game will be a double header against Stockholm's A and B team at our new venue - Windsor Leisure Centre on November 19th.  Tickets will be on sale at the end of October (wear your white wristband to be entered into a prize draw.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (posted September 6th 2011)

On Sept 4th 2007 we put on our (£20) skates and (wafer-thin) knee pads for our very first practice at Montem Leisure Centre in Slough.  Founded by (now) husband and wife: Rollin StoneR and Yorkshire Tripper, the Royal Windsor Rollergirls have gone from strength to strength.  As we enter our 5th year and 3rd full bouting season, we've lots to look forward to.  We already have several games in the diary, both home (at our new venue in Windsor) and away, and for the first time ever we'll be playing outside the UK.  We're proud members of the UKRDA and appreciate the support and advice its members provide.  We recently became apprentice members of the WFTDA and look forward to working towards full membership.  To celebrate our 4th birthday we'll be holding a party, along with our annual player awards in Windsor this Friday.  Check back here soon to find out (among others) who is the 'one to watch next season' who was our 'player of the year' and just who is the 'life of the after-party'.

THANK YOU!
We'd like to say a huge thank you to our main training venue Charters Leisure Centre in Ascot for allowing us a permanent derby track in their sports hall.  The track in a fitting royal blue is a huge help to our training making the skaters and refs job a whole lot easier - thanks!
